Smoked trout dip is a classic British appetizer recipe that is incredibly easy to make. Some dishes are so darn simple, I sometimes can’t believe they aren’t more popular.

This smoked trout dip is one of those dishes. I got the recipe over 35 years ago when I was traveling through England after college.

I stayed with friends of my mom. For dinner one night, we each were served a small ramekin of this creamy smoked trout dip, which is more like a mousse, with some water biscuits as our starter. I immediately fell in love with the velvety texture and slightly smoky flavor of the fish.

The next day I left for Scotland with the recipe in my backpack! I first published this on September 26th, 2013.  I’ve updated the photos and in the process discovered it’s also low-carb, keto and gluten free.

Ingredients for smoked trout dip

Smoked trout can be purchased in most local or specialty markets. I found this one at Trader Joe’s.

Smoked fish seems to be much more popular in England and smoked mackerel would work equally well. This is a classic British starter, that’s not much more than butter and a bit of cream. Although it’s generally served with water biscuits or cream crackers, you can pipe it into cucumber cups, or serve it American Style on top of thick-cut potato chips.

When I re-made this smoked trout dip last weekend, I spread some on Trader Joe’s new gluten free crispbread, which are pretty low-carb; only 6 grams for each slice.

I love them, but not everyone has a Trader Joe’s close-by. Scroll to the bottom of this post for a collection of low-carb, gluten-free and keto crackers that I’ve collected from some of my healthy blogger friends. You’ll also find some more delicious appetizer ideas that are low-carb, gluten free and keto friendly. You can purchase smoked trout from Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods or from Amazon. Maybe you’re lucky enough to catch and smoke your own trout? This recipe is for you!

How to make smoked trout dip

Remove the skin from the smoked trout and break it into pieces. Pulse the trout a few times in the bowl of a food processor. Add remaining ingredients until mousse is blended and somewhat smooth. Serve with vegetables, water biscuits or low-carb crackers.

Smoked trout mousse is a traditional British starter or appetizer. Smoked trout can be purchased in most major markets. Smoked mackerel or any smoked fish would be delicious as well.

Is this correct? It seems like an awful lot of butter. I want to make it but I’m worried that 4:3 ratio of trout to butter is off.

    1. Did you make it? Yes it’s correct. Not sure why you’ve given me four stars without having made it? It’s a spread that goes on crackers or bread.

      1. I gave you 4 stars because I haven’t tried it yet, should I have left it at zero and then updated it afterwards?

I wanted to check the recipe was correct so I didn’t waste over a pound of butter if it wasn’t.

Thanks for the reply, I’ll make it now you confirmed it’s not a mistake

Oh my goodness! This is sooo easy and was a hit at a little party I had over the weekend. I served it with a combination of regular and gluten free crackers.
