Homemade dog treats are what a dog eats!
I do like to feed all the members of my family, including my four-legged girl. She’s my dog for sure.
Of course, we did buy her for the girls, but I think even canines sense who’s who in a family. She knows that Spencer is for play time, so as soon as he comes home from work, she grabs a tug-toy and coaxes him into a game of tug of war. The moment I put on my running shoes, she races for the door, because she knows we’re off for a walk. She’ll follow me from room to room, settle down contentedly, even if it’s just for a few minutes. She has a bed at the foot of our bed, but I let her sneak up on the bed…and she’s allowed, only if she stays on my side!
So when we got word from our local humane society that they were running low on dog biscuits, Sophie and I decided to make a few batches of homemade dog treats.
The Pasadena Humane Society has a specific recipe, which we needed to follow. But I figured as long as I had all the ingredients, I might as well do some dog biscuit testing for my own kid. After all, I had a willing taste tester right at my feet!
Humane Society Approved Homemade Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 3 cups whole-wheat flour
- 1 cup powdered dry milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 cup of ice water
- 3/4 cup meat drippings or shortening
- 2 eggs beaten
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Combine flour, milk, salt, garlic and brown sugar
- Cut in shortening or drippings until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal
- Mix in egg. Add enough water so that mixture forms a ball.
- Pat out dough 1/2 inch thick with your fingers and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter
- Place biscuits on a lightly-oiled cookie sheet (I used slipat cookie liners)
- Bake for 25-35 minutes. Remove from oven and cool on a rack.
- Because the biscuits do not contain preservatives, store in an air-tight container in the fridge or freezer. (They last about 3 days at room temp, so I take a enough for a few days at a time)
Since pumpkin is everywhere right now, I thought Annabelle might like her own Pumpkin Peanut Butter Homemade Dog Treats. I substituted peanut butter for the meat drippings and omitted the salt, garlic and sugar. So here’s my version.
I’m willing to bet that Peanut Butter Pumpkin Homemade Dog Treats are going to be your furry friend’s favorite, too!
Peanut Butter Pumpkin Homemade Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 3 cups whole-wheat flour
- 1 cup powdered dry milk
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin not pumpkin pie filling
- 1 cup of ice water
- 3/4 cup natural peanut butter
- 2 eggs beaten
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Combine flour, milk, pumpkin in a large bowl
- Cut in peanut butter until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal
- Mix in egg. Add enough water so that mixture forms a ball.
- Pat out dough 1/2 inch thick with your fingers and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter
- Place biscuits on a lightly-oiled cookie sheet (I used slipat cookie liners) Prick biscuits with a fork. (I just do this for the look, not for any culinary reason)

The things we do for our four legged friends! But it’s worth it! I’ve always wanted to try my hand at making homemade dog treats but now that I know how simple it can be I might just have to give it a try!
