Homemade pizza will make your family pizza night more special and delicious than ever before!
My poor children often remind me that they have never had pizza delivered to our house. I figure with all the soccer/softball/birthday party pizza they will have in their life times, the fact they won’t ever have the experience of Pizza Man at our door is not really a big deal. Besides, when pizza is so easy to make at home, why bother? If you’re really intimidated by the dough, buy some pre-made dough (Trader Joe’s has great white or whole wheat dough for a couple of bucks in the deli section). But I prefer to use my own olive oil dough which I keep in the refrigerator, and is the perfect homemade pizza dough.
The secret? Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day, by Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois. After I discovered their life changing philosophy on bread making, (why weren’t we taught THAT in cooking school?!) I always keep a tub of homemade pizza dough in the fridge. It’s fun to make pizza when the kids have sleep overs. Sometimes I will pre-bake individual crusts, letting them choose what they what to top their pizzas with.
This time, since Emma was having 6 girlfriends spend the night, I made three pizzas, all with different toppings. One was a loaded vegetarian, another was pepperoni, mushroom, kalamata olive, and one was quatro fromaggio.
Here’s the recipe for the homemade pizza dough:
- 1 batch artisan pizza dough
- Toppings of your choice
- Pre-heat oven to 450*
- Roll out dough to desired thickness
- Pre-bake crust on a pizza stone or baking sheet for 5 to 7 minutes.
- Remove pre-baked crust from oven and add toppings.
- Return to the oven and bake until cheese is bubbly and hot.
